Prescription Drugs | Kansas Launches Generic Rx Discount Program
[Jan 06, 2006]

Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D) on Wednesday announced a new program for low-income state residents that will provide "significant discounts" on most generic prescription drugs, the Wichita Eagle reports. CommunityRx Kansas was approved and funded by the state Legislature in 2005. According to Sebelius, it will offer discounts between 15% and 80% on most generic drugs for uninsured residents with annual incomes up to 200% of the federal poverty level who do not qualify for public health insurance programs. An estimated 150,000 Kansas residents are eligible for the program, according to Sebelius. Right Choice Pharmacy and Prescription Network of Kansas will administer CommunityRx, which will cost participants $10 annually. The state will pay about $200,000 to process the program, and the 286 participating pharmacies will absorb the actual cost of offering the discounted drugs, the Eagle reports. Peter Stern, executive director of Prescription Network, said, "There are a lot of programs out there like discount cards, but this is different," adding, "This is to use ... on very low-cost generics. This will save people a lot of money." Sebelius also announced that Kansas will distribute $500,000 to bolster community resources that help Medicare beneficiaries enroll in the new Medicare drug benefit. "People are confused, frustrated and even frightened in the face of all these plans," Sebelius said, noting that the funding will help pay for volunteers, toll-free hotlines and training sessions (Atwater, Wichita Eagle, 1/5).
